Post Graduate Program in Retail Management (PGPRM)

Retail is India's largest industry, accounting for over 10 per cent of the country's GDP and around 8 per cent of the employment. It has emerged as one of the most dynamic and fast paced industries with several players entering the market. India's vast middle class and its almost untapped retail industry are key attractions for global retail giants entering newer markets. Retailing in India is marching its way towards becoming the next boom industry. The PGPRM program at IBA is aimed at this emergence.

The IBA-PGPRM program is conducted in line with retail industry requirement. The course, pedagogy and inputs have been structured to meet the requirements of the Industry. The PGPRM program is designed in association with Retail Association of India, (RAI).

RAI’s principal objective is to be the voice of Indian retailers through its various efforts that aim at uplifting the standards of retailing in the country and so does IBA with it’s commitment to meet and deliver newer managerial skills.

The Programme

The program is an 18-month full time program and is formed by a combination of theory and practical experience. The first year consists of theoretical analysis, while the second year is organized for hands-on instruction in one or more companies.

In the second year students begin to apply for a trainee position in a company. While at the company, they will gain practical experience in the theoretical issues they learned at IBA.

Organized retail in India which is currently at about 9% is expected to grow at a fast pace of 35% for the next few years, because of the current nascent stage of modern retail, and the investments being planned in this sector by existing and new players.

It is estimated that the organized retail market will be 20% of total retailing in India by 2008. It is already permeating to smaller towns in all parts of the country. The leads are clear - Reliance Industries’s retail venture, global retail giant Wal-Mart’s are at the door of this giant sector - Retail in India is estimated to be more than USD 320 billion.
