Police Commissioner Satyapal Singh on Monday launched the Accident Report and Analysis System (ARS) for Pune. Pune is the first city in India to get such a system.

The ARS is a Web GIS interface for reporting accidents and generating various reports. It has been designed to document the multiple facets of traffic accidents and help optimise the use of limited resources that are available to reduce the number and severity of the accidents.

The ARS comprises software that develops all reports needed by the police for routine processing. Its usage can be extended by plotting useful locations like schools, signals, markets and parking areas for analysing the information further.

Deputy commissioner (traffic) Manoj Patil said, "The ARS is very important for Pune where the number of accidents per lakh population is very high. Ideally, roads should be 10.5 per cent of total area of the city. But in Pune, roads are only 6.5 per cent of the total area," he said.

The ARS project is a joint initiative of the traffic police department and Janwani, an NGO supported by MCCIA. The project, developed by Indictrans, has been sponsored by Weikfield, Transworld Compressor Technologies Ltd and KPIT Cummins.
