These days, ecolabelling has been practiced around the world, it is a voluntary method of voluntary method of environmental performance certification and labelling. An ‘ecolabel’ is a label which identifies overall environmental preference of a product or service within a specific product or service category based on life cycle considerations.
A comprehensive sustainability ecolabel assess overall sustainability of both products and service categories from a “Lifecycle”, i.e., cradle-to-grave perspective. An ecolabel is awarded by an impartial third-party. The conscious buyer (consumer) and progressive seller (product manufacturer/service provider) can both be benefitted when this label is made available in India.
The Ecolabelling Programme will be launched under the aegis of the Centre for Innovation, Incubation and Entrepreneurship (CIIE) of the IIMA, which has brought together an impressive group of national and international experts from industry and academia to form the Steering Committee for the Ecolabelling Project. It will have the final word with respect to setting the overall approach, the certification criteria and for awarding ratings to specific products and services.
