Best approch in learning new technology and in new area of work
But, with the kind of deadlines and the industry we are in to, demands a quick rampup time.
To cater to quick rampup (mostly self-study), I am requesting readers who have been thru the same experience to share the best practices they have come across (across the globe). so as to sum it up and give a conclusive way of approach that quickens the learning curve and helps achieve both career goals and alines with the organizational goals.
Here are few steps that I follow and have seen:
From the experts have a chalk talk on the overall picture.
To not to get biased keep a note of all the questions and (self) answers and shoot these Q&A to the experts.
In parallel to the reading - build a evaluation system, as to how will the study be measured?
For first start with the modules' presentations
Give presentation of understanding to the team
Identify the experts around for each area
Ask ask ask ask a lot of questions (during tea or off time)
Spend time with the performers to understand their way of handling routine things.
See thru - hands-on - sit with an expert who is solving any issue, be supportive enough to do things for him like a student. Do analyze the problem / log and provide assistance that is helpful in real-time and is associated with the real problem.
When comfortable with modules and the way things run, jot out a plan for a pilot project - that is pick a problem and seek help from the experts to know how much time it should take and carefully plan the activity to solve it.
When solution is ready, discuss it with the team and also dont forget to discuss the approach you have taken to reach the root cause. May be they suggest you some quick short-cuts that could have saved a lot of time!
And finally, whatever the info is aquired -- document it !!!!!!!!!
Any more practical , working suggestions, or tried and proven ways of improving learning can be shared across.
Also share your experience of using above said techniques.
Cheers,
Vijay
