India can have 500 mn internet users by 2012, if infrastructural bottlenecks removed: MAIT

India could have 500 million internet users, 100 million broadbandconnections and 100 million connected devices by 2012, providedinfrastructural bottlenecks are removed and 3G and WiMax networks arerolled out early, according to MAIT (Manufacturers' Association for Information Technology).

“MAIT has set for itself an ambitious target -- Goal 511 -- forachieving 500 million internet users, 100 million broadband connectionsand 100 million connected devices by 2012. This calls for strengtheningof the national IT infrastructure along with the physicalinfrastructure on a priority basis,” Vinnie Mehta, executive director,MAIT, has said.

At present, there are 60 million internet users, three millionbroadband subscribers and about 1-2 million connected devices in thecountry. [Source: Hindu]
