Job prospects after an MBA
If you’re planning to pursue an MBA program, you should also consider the job prospects after an MBA like where do you want o work, what kind of role you want, placement record of the school etc. Here is how you should evaluate this:
Kind of role you want – If you already have some experience, then this is very important. Most top B-schools in the world offer the kind of education that can place you in any kind of role you want in future. This might be true for 20% of the class only and that too for the top 20%. For others, you will just have to accept a different role than the one you thought of. Try to find the right type of B-school where it can put you into the role you want later on. Do your own research and select the schools where you think your prospects are brighter, a school like Babson (Olin Graduate School, US) might concentrate more on entrepreneurship, and Boston might see more IT consultancy roles rolled out.
Where do you want to work – After doing your MBA, if you want to work abroad like for instance, in the US, then it is advisable to do an MBA from the US itself because it won’t be possible to land a job there after doing an MBA from ISB for example.
Placement record of the school – In foreign schools, especially in countries like UK, placements does not happen the way it does in India. So, don’t compare the percentage of people placed from campus when comparing different schools, look at the overall placements instead, including the ones that happen after the class graduates. Look at how it fared in terms of the sector which you are targeting post MBA. Also look at the placements offered to students similar to your profile, background and experience. It’s important to also look at the career statistics of people after 3-5 years of passing out as well.
How to find the placement statistics – Contact the career services of the school so that you can get to know how good a school is by checking to see how active its career services is. Most schools have a very good and proactive career/placement services cell, contact them and get the latest information. Also get in touch with current students of the class, either by visiting the school, or again by mailing career services/alumni associations and find the information.
