Booming Indian Telecom Sector

India is one of the world's fastest growing telecom markets. The Indian telecommunications network is the third largest in the world and the second largest among the emerging economies of Asia. The major players in the sector are Bharti Airtel, Reliance Communications, Idea Cellular, Tata Communications, Tata Teleservices and MTNL.
 

Growth in telecom industry
India is the second largest mobile handset market and has witnessed a growth of 14.1 per cent in 2011. The mobile handset market's revenues in India will grow from US$ 5.7 billion in 2010 to US$ 7.8 billion in 2016, according to the study "The Mobile Handset and Smartphone Market in India" by business research and consulting firm, Frost & Sullivan.

The Indian telecommunication market will cross the US$ 101 billion mark in five years, according to Arvind Subramanian, Partner and Director, Boston Consulting Group (BCG). The industry will continue to grow at 12-13 per cent annually. This will result in more investment and career opportunities in telecommunication sector.

Investment prospects

The mobile subscribers in India are growing at a pace of over 15 million every month. As a result, the telecom sector is likely to witness huge investments of around US$ 112.6 billion in the 12th five year plan (2012-17), according to the Department of Telecom.
 

Recruitments in telecom sector

Recruitments in telecom sector are expanding rapidly, with the Government offering license to new players and auction of 3G and BWA (Broadband Wireless Access) spectrum.

Telecom jobs are generally considered as high level jobs, which are very popular in terms of remuneration and status.

A career in telecommunication has vast scope for future growth. Many major telecom companies which have established their operations in India need skilled technicians, engineers and managers in various fields such as customer support, administration, finance, sales, networking, IT, etc. There are regular job openings for various posts like telecom engineers, quality analysts, network security administrators, product managers, etc. The new projects, setting up of new service bases, expansion of coverage areas, network installations, maintenance, etc. are providing more and more employment opportunities in the sector.

“The Indian telecom sector is going to provide employment to around one crore people by the end of 2012, which includes about 28 lakh direct jobs and around 70 lakh indirect jobs,” as per the recent study commissioned by the Cellular Operators Association of India (COAI).
