The engineering industry is the largest segment which accounts for 3 per cent of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and represents about 27 per cent of the total industrial factories in the organised sector. Further, the exports from the engineering sector form about one-fourth of India's total merchandise shipments. The US and Europe are major markets for India as they account for over 60 per cent of the country's total engineering exports.

    The engineering profession is one of the oldest traditional professions in the world. There are enormous industrial engineering jobs in India as engineers are involved in almost every aspect of the community from building roads, bridges, houses, factories, high rise building to production of products and goods.

    Aeronautical Engineering: It is the study related to aircraft and spacecraft. In India, most of the aeronautical engineers are placed by Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) and the Ministry of Defense.

    Electronics and Communication Engineering: It is a detailed study of digital electronics, logical design, electronic circuits, etc. Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL), Electronics Corporation of India Limited (ECIL), Intel, Samsung, Sony, Toshiba, and Philips are some of the companies under this branch.

    Marine Engineering: Marine engineering basically deals with onboard ship operations like maintenance, etc. Job opportunities in marine engineering are related to cargo ships, passenger ships, tanker vessels, etc.

    Educational Requirement for Engineers

    A four year bachelor's degree in engineering from an institution accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) is required for almost all engineering jobs, although graduates with Physical Science or Mathematics degrees will occasionally qualify for some of the engineering jobs.
