Infrastructure sector is the backbone of Indian economy and it plays a critical role in the development of social and cultural segments. The sector comprises of a network of roads, coastlines, airports, railways, telecommunications, electricity, irrigation and construction projects.

India's infrastructure growth has been exponential over the past decade. Today, we are the fourth largest and probably the second-fastest growing economy, with infrastructure being one of the cornerstones. The sector needs to grow at a compounded annual growth rate (CAGR) of 15 per cent for next five years to sustain the overall economic development of India.

The Planning Commission has envisaged a trillion dollar investment in infrastructure between 2012-13 and 2016-17, and expects half of the money to come from the private sector. The sector is the base where the economic superstructure of the country lies and is a very important segment in a human being’s life. Many new projects are coming up and the sector requires huge manpower to meet their objectives.

Recruitments in the sector

The sector has immense potential in generating huge amount of employment, requires manpower starting from unskilled site workers to highly skilled engineers, architects and infrastructure manager job roles. It has been found out that construction industry offers employment to around 7 per cent of the total employed work force across the world.

The growth of other sectors also enabled this sector to boom. For e.g., higher level of retail and hospitality related activities contribute to employment generation in the infrastructure sector.

Hiring trends

As the Government of India has opened up the sector for private investment, the recruitments for infrastructure manager job profiles are increasing. Be it building roads, ports or even nuclear plants, private companies are looking for experts who have experience in the infrastructure sector. Moreover, state governments and Indian Central Government are making rapid progress on construction of road, highways, railways, shipping etc. which has created a significant increase in employment generation.

There are seven main segments that recruits majority of the people in this segment namely Civil engineering, Research & Development, Design engineering, Contract management, Highways project management, Airports project management and consulting services. Combined together the workforce in these segments is expected to increase by 8-10 per cent over the next few years.

Talent challenges

Although the construction industry employs 33 million people, second only to the agricultural sector, the incremental workforce requirement is around four million people per year over the next couple of years to sustain the current growth rate.
