In my 14 plus years as a recruitment consultant , i have seen and read thousands of profiles. Profiles of candidates at all levels, with varying years of experience, professionals from top B schools and plain graduates.

On an average 6 out of 10 people submitting their profiles will enquire if the profile meets requirement. At the same time 6 out of 10 people will make changes to their profile , even after being specifically asked to do so. I guess we fell in love with words that we have written or we feel that this is what is most important work that we have done in various jobs.

Nowdays various recruitment portals have a resume building service. Most resumes recieved from candidates who availed or copied from people who used such services are stereotyped with one complete page highlighting competencies, aspirations etc. Believe me no one has time to read that and competencies will be assesed in the interviewing process by the hiring employer. So dont waste precious breath there.

Now what it is that a profile must have to get attention. Be a recruiter or a prospective employer.

1. It should be crisp. Not more that two and a half pages.

2. Best should come first. If you are from good college , put it upfront, else at the last. 

3. Summary: As the word says..it should be a summary not a half pager. Highlight your career without using too many adjectives glorifying yourself. Instead highlight how the organization benefitted by you being their sales guy/ project guy/ CEO/ CIO .

4. Career Path: Do mention details for each job role separately. It is easier for the hiring managers. Describe your role , do not write JD that you got from HR. Highlight Organization achievements under your leadership. Mention revenues, target numbers, team size ..for better appreciation of your profile.

5. last but not least: Do understand the role that you are applying for. Also understand the organization requirement from the role & Organization Culture. Accordingly highlight areas which will be relevant to the hiring employer. Some organization like Rambo's some like team players. See if you fit the profile and thereafter evaluate your resume to see if it will talk to your prospective employee in his / her language. Else in a 1 minute window given to each profile..yours will find its way to trash box.
