Backup Power for the iPhone With Other Adapter

Third Rail’s iPhone case can accept multiple batteries.

The Third Rail System may be the lightest iPhone case with an auxiliary battery, or it may be the heaviest. I’ll explain.

The system consists of two parts, a case without a battery, and a backup battery that snaps onto the case. With the battery in place it is still pretty sleek and lightweight. But you can piggyback more batteries on top of the first battery, building a brick-like case with a month-long charge if you so choose.

Obviously, the battery-brick scheme isn’t very practical, but the ability to switch out a full battery for one that is running low may be.

The system has another trick up its sleeve, though. The batteries have a circuit that allows them to completely transfer their power to a different battery. When you attach the battery to the case it will top off your iPhone. Then you can remove the battery until you need it again, giving you less to carry.

The Third Rail batteries can even be used to charge each other. With two mini-USB charging ports on the batteries, they can also be daisy-chained to power or charge more than one device at a time.

Ingenuity doesn’t come cheaply, though. The Third Rail systems is $40 for the case and $60 for a battery and charging cable, or $90 for the pair.

There is also what might be considered a design flaw. Because it is so easy to snap batteries into he case, it’s just as easy to unsnap them by mistake. A solid jolt will pop the $60 battery loose. The company said it requires a four- to five-pound impact to dislodge the battery, but somehow I managed. It may be worth adding one element of your own to complete the Third Rail System — a strip of duct tape.
