Cakes and their history

The word cake is of Viking origin “kaka”. The differentiation between breads and cake has been difficult.

The Greeks used to make cheesecakes with goat’s milk.

In Rome the basic bread dough was mixed with butter, eggs and honey and other fruits like raisin, nuts etc. Though this was not purely a cake but was sweet and can be considered a predecessor.

In England the cake and breads were similar; the only difference was in the shapes. The cakes used to be round and while cooking these were turned over. The bread was left as is during the baking process. For special occasions in 14th century the special cakes were made.

Egypt was one of the first countries to use baking and made breads sweetened with honey.

Spain is said to have introduced sponge cakes which probably originated during the Renaissance.

France had introduced sweet dishes at the end of meals and these were known as gateau.

Moulds came into being in the 17th century. The 19th century saw emergence of soda and baking carbonate which made replaced yeast. Also temperature controlled ovens were discovered in this phase which made baking easier.

This tradition moved to housewives making them at home in the mid 20th century.

Cake has been a prominent part of all celebrations whether a birthday or a wedding.
