How to Connect a Laptop to a RS485 Serial Laptop Adapter Card

RS485 is a serial connection standard no longer used on laptop computers (or desktops, by that matter). However, older hardware you may still use runs off of an RS-485 serial connection, so if you want to continue using the equipment with your laptop, you must install an RS485 serial laptop adapter card into your computer. An RS485 adapter gives your computer the ability to communicate with the older hardware.

Locate the expansion card slot on the side of your laptop. The slot should have a protective insert in the opening. Push the insert in towards the computer. This unlocks any expansion card, popping it out.

Slide the card out, then insert the RS485 serial Apple power adapter card into the opening.

Place the driver installation CD into the disc drive of your computer, then wait a moment for the installation wizard to load onto the screen. Accept the end user agreement, then follow the prompts to install the driver.

Restart the computer system. Plug the serial cable into the serial connection port on the RS485 adapter card, then tighten the other end to the serial hardware. This completes the serial connection on your laptop computer.
