2012 Consumer Electronics : Year of the tablets at CES

THE annual Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas this week will see more Android tablet computers on show, with Samsung expected to showcase its new Windows 8 tablet.

Technology research house Ovum expects vendors to bundle consumer tablets with mobile management software as they chase the enterprise market.

Research In Motion is to unveil its new-generation tablet operating system although it is unclear if RIM will use the event to launch the Playbook 2, Ovum said in a statement.

Smart TV applications and enhanced high-definition TV technology, dubbed Ultra Definition TV, is expected to be on display. UDT is described as the successor to HD.

PC manufactures are expected to push a slew of Ultrabook devices to take Apple's MacBook Air head-on in form factor and specifications.

On Microsoft, Ovum said: "We will be looking for more insight into Windows 8 beyond the 2011 preview and specific information on release dates and form factors, including a hands-on with Samsung's Windows 8 tablet."

"Specifically we will be looking at how Microsoft is looking to enable the enterprise to manage and exploit the employee-provisioned laptop trend in Windows 8 and other form factors and deployment scenarios it is considering."

Ovum expects Microsoft to clarify whether older Windows apps will work on new Windows 8 tablets.

"In addition to Windows 8, we hope to hear more about applications for its Kinect-based gesture interface in the enterprise, including retail, manufacturing and healthcare, following the release of the Kinect enterprise software development kit in 2011," Ovum said.
