How to stay focussed @ work?
Step1 Make sure you are getting plenty of sleep. If possible, go to bed an hour earlier than usual at least one or two nights per week. Sleep deprivation can build up over time and you may start to feel stressed simply because of the need for more sleep.
Step2 Minimize distractions to the extent that you can. Many people work in cubicles instead of enclosed offices. This makes you more likely to be distracted by sensory inputs for all directions. If possible, make use of either headphones with an ipod or CD player or ear plugs to minimize the noise
Step3 Be systematic about what you are doing and how you plan to accomplish the tasks. Use software for project management, which helps you break down a large work project into tasks then to set individual time lines for each item. There is a small learning curve on developing your ability to do this, but once you know the software, you can use it for most anything. Powerpoint is also a great tool, particularly for developing presentations. It is also very intuitive to learn. Give it a try yourself or take a half day class on it.
Step4 If someone is deliberately distracting you from what you need to do, pull them aside and in a calm voice explain that you cannot allow his interruptions but will call him when you finish so you can discuss his needs. Follow through on any promises you make.
Step5 Take Food Breaks Take care of your biological needs so you will be able to concentrate. Don’t go hungry so that you can meet a deadline, as your concentration will suffer along with your blood sugar level. Deprivation of this type will have a negative effect on the quality of your work product. Also, take frequent stretch breaks and walks when you can.
