Adesh Singh's Story
The Journey So Far:
I started as a usability engineer in 2004 with PeopleSoft and moved to Oracle as an interaction designer as part of PSFT acquisition. Joined Yahoo! in 2009 to support Yahoo!'s search and display advertising platforms. As an alumni, I continued my association with IIT Kanpur as a guest faculty.
Job Profile:
I am a Principal Interaction Designer with and my job is to create end-to-end user experiences for our online consumers and customers. I am responsible for the design of Display Advertising Platforms, Creative Solutions and also part of team which defines the B2B Design Language for Yahoo
The Decisions That Matter
After spending 5 years in enterprise domain with Oracle, I decided to join Yahoo! to explore consumer internet domain. Yahoo! was going through lot of changes and I was recommended by many people to reconsider my decision. I joined instead and later realized it was one my best career decisions ever.
Career Profile:
I am a designer and my job is to create wonderful experiences in Yahoo!'s products. I am responsible for the design of Yahoo!'s advertising platforms and creative suites for our agency partners. I also ensure that advertisements on Yahoo! properties provide great experience to our online audience.
Working Life Management:
Like everyone out there I am also a victim of working with global teams and pretty much available 24x7. So, I make use of few perks like flex-timings, work from home etc. I have a beautiful family and they are very supportive. This combination works out for me. There is much to improve though.
Done Differently:
I guess I would've answered differently if I was dissatisfied with my current career. Which is not the case with me. However, I do imagine me making movies, writing fiction novels and publishing comic books for children.
Plans For The Future:
I don't have any specific position in my mind. All I wish is to reach a position where I could make an impact on millions of people by building products and solutions for them, which would make their life easier and they get best out the technology around us.
Changes In The Professional Environment:
In my opinion, the organizations are drifting away from traditional hirarchical command-n-control model to become flat, agile and competitive. This is a good sign for innovation in large product companies, which earlier seldom considered it a critical business function for growth and revenues.
Growth Strategy:
Though I enjoy being an independent contributer in the field of design, I do aim for a leadership position. I invest significant time and energy to hone my professional and personal skills and to grow in my career. Currently, I am pursuing Executive General Management Program at IIM Bangalore.
Advice For New Professionals:
I believe our profession is not very different from our personal life. We do a lot of things in our personal life with passion, we must reflect the same in our work life. That means, we must not choose a profession merely to make money, but to really do something we are passionate about.
Role Model:
I admire all those great souls who invented great products and made our life exciting and wonderful. I admire the works of Leonardo-da-Vinci and Thomas Edison. In recent times I am highly influenced by James Cameron and his passion to create out of the world experiences though his movies.
