Tips To Resolve “the underlying task reported failure…” Error

File systems (HFS, HFS+, HFS Wrapper) installed on Mac machines are very sensitive and prone to corruption. Few main causes for file system damage can be improper system shutdown, virus infection, and application malfunction. In most cases of file system damage, the system becomes unbootable, resulting in inaccessibility of all the data saved on the Mac hard drive.

To get rid of any file system corruption issue and to access the hard drive data, an easy way is to use an inbuilt file system repair utility named ‘FSCK’. This utility – although successful in most cases – can fail when the corruption is severe. For such situations, the user needs to restore the data from a comprehensive backup. But, in case no backup is available, then the user can use a commercial Data Recovery Mac utility to recover the data. Below is the scenario that explains Mac file system corruption in detail.

Suppose, you have a Mac OS X 10.4.1 machine (connected to the Internet) and you are working on a Word document. Suddenly, the document freezes and makes everything on the machine become inaccessible. You perform an improper system shutdown and restart your machine. However, when you restart your machine, a blue screen appears and the boot process stops at the Apple logo. On verifying with disk repair utilities, you encounter the below error message:

“checking HFS plus volume, checking extents overflow file, and checking catalog file.”

On selecting ‘repair’ option, you get another error message:

“Error: the underlying task reported failure on exit.”

On selecting ‘repair’ option again, below error message appears:

“repairing disk failed with error. Could not unmount disk”

Data saved in the hard drive becomes inaccessible after the above error message appears.

Cause:

Corruption of HFS (Hierarchical File System) due to fatal virus attack.

Resolution:

To resolve the above file system corruption error message and to access the data, you will need to follow the below steps:

1. Perform a clean reinstall of mac OS X 10.4.1.

2. Perform restoration from an updated backup.

However, in case of absence of a valid backup, select Mac Data Recovery utility. Such Mac File Recovery tools can be used by any Mac user and do not require technical skills to perform recovery.

Stellar Phoenix Macintosh Data Recovery is a powerful Mac File Recovery application that supports recovery of data from formatted HFS, HFS+, HFSX, HFS Wrapper, and FAT file system based hard drives. The user-friendly tool supports Mac OS X 10.3.9, 10.4 Tiger, 10.5 Leopard, and 10.6 Snow Leopard operating systems.
