sugar control - The right way
I recently came across a patient who very enthusiastically told me that he had gone to a nturopathy centre and he had controlled his sugar , lost 8 kgs in 20 days and was off insulin. On enquiry about his diet I found that he was hardly eating any ting during the day-. His typical pattern was :- Bf- a herbal decoction Lunch- 1 chapati with boiled vegetables and thin buttermilk Evening - vegetable juice / mausmi juice Dinner- just boiled vegetables+ /- sometimes sprouts. No milk no dal . On close scrutiny you can appreciate that his diet is low in energy giving foods viz. carbs and fats and very poor in proteins as he is not taking milk,( only a glass of thin butter milk) sprouts or cooked dals regularly. Being a vegan he would not take any non veg either. so what ever weight he had lost was a lots of water as well as some muscle . As he is not taking enough carbohydrates so the sugar levels have automatically fallen and as far as the insulin is concerned, he is taking his tablet for diabetes but as there is hardly any gliucose in the blood so no need of isulin (indigenous or in form of injections). On further enquiry he admitted that though he was feeling lighter but his energy levels are low.( quite obvious isn't it? ) This is a wrong way of controlling blood sugar . It should be through a gradual approach and a balanced diet. So do not fall for meraculous solutions.
wishing health for all
