Build Eco System for Career Success
However, I noticed seveal mistakes that elude the success: The common ones are:
- Competent people missed to seize the opportunity - lack of alertness or thinking that we dont have to go there, they will come to us!
- Choosing wrong opportunities that do not suit the competence (thinking that what is good for you will be good for me too!)
- Not upgrading or learning to measure up to the demands of the opportunity (riding on the success of yesteryears)
- Not giving 100% even after choosing an oppotunity that suits the competence
But there is another mistake which many tend to even notice. That is to build an eco system - both at personal and professional level.
Our career success depends on the support and encouragement extended by several others in our life. If people in our family do not subscribe to my career success, then we will be torn between different priorities which will force us to give less than our best at work.
Similarly, we need to ensure a terrific rapport with our colleagues at work - though they may not be a part of our work or assignment. As simple as some one taking a message on your behalf, entertaining your visitor in your absence, sharing a printer in emergency, giving you clues as to how to quickly ask for a cab etc.
I noticed many who think if they are competent and have a good rapport with boss, they will be successful. It is a very myopic view of success. It does not work always.
Poor relationships with collegues can lead to non-cooperation; jealousy, office politics etc which can have negative impact on your work and finally will hamper your success.
Focus beyond competence and relationship with boss - build your eco system!
It works well when more people around you wish for your success!
