"Diablo 3" Catastrophe Sounded the Alarm for DRM Policy

It is seen as one of the most anticipated video game works in the game history. Through 12 years of waiting, Blizzard's Diablo has become the game work with the highest booking sales so far. But from the first moment the game was formally launched, the process of the game becomes a catastrophic farce. DRM's defects and the problems of the digital future road were gradually exposed. On May 15, 2012, Blizzard officially launched "Diablo 3" which is a feast which has been stewed for over a decade in the Blizzard dishes. Shortly after the release of the game, the reports about server downtime and a variety of error messages appeared in the major media websites. Fatal error 37 (the game server is full) has become a nightmare for players. All kinds of humor pieces and spoof pictures began to Fill in the network quickly.

I do not want to criticize Blizzard too much on this issue, they only made a mistake which should not be committed mostly in this highly anticipated game. For the players who buy the game, because of this error, they were locked outside their wallets. This indicates the problems under such strict DRM security control, and also expects the tragic situation which may rise in the gaming world in the next few years.

When you Google "DRM", you will see a long list of criticism and verbal abuse against the game publishers who use DRM. DRM related: drm removal freeware. Although EA and Ubisoft used DRM security policy in many of their games, they both had negative impacts, but the problem has not been enlarged and suffered from attention until the "Diablo 3" tragedy.

In the early morning of 15th, the players from all over the world reported that they encountered the error that they can not log on the server. If the problem was happened on a computer game, it doesn't matter. But this is "Diablo 3", this error means that thousands of players lost the game, they even can not experience offline single story mode.

I fully understand the need for anti-piracy measures. The piracy situation must be morewidespread and rampant than ever before, the new game works were often leaked to various downloading sites and file sharing sites a few days or even a few weeks before release by cracking way. For example, "Crysis 2" was able to download on the network a month before the official release. The "error 37" of "Diablo God 3" tells us that we need a more transparent DRM policy rather than letting those who purchase the game pay for the piracy problem.
