When I come online and chat with you is it me you are chatting with or is it a computer program? Well it could be my computer pretending to be me. The important question is - Do you think you can make out the difference?
There is an annual competition called the Loebner Prize, for just such systems. A system that can fool almost everyone into thinking that it is human would net a cool $100, 000. However, so far such a system hasnt been built. So the best system from among those competing wins a $2000 prize money and the Loebner Bronze Medal.
Do you think such a system which fools humans can be built? Many scientists believe natural language processing and dialog systems are improving and very soon such systems will be possible.
Imagine the possibilities? Some studies show that a person cannot chat with more than 4 people at a time. But most of us like to have online conversations with more than four people. We also would like each of the people we are chatting up think that they are the only person we are chatting with. Now the smart thing will be to let the computer take over with some of your friends.
Now imagine the consequences? Three of your friends chatting separately with your computer, invite you for dinner. The computer says yes to all three of them? Well maybe the computer will be smart enough not to make such mistakes or maybe it will prompt you whenever such decisions need to be made?
