Do you really need Oracle EE Oracle Enterprise Edition or Oracle SE?

Technical Lead
Unfortunately installation takes placed by non-specialists of Oracle software, installation done with analysis of client needs and application structure details. Due to this reason client has to spend more charges of Oracle licensing cost when it doesn’t require Oracle Enterprise Edition.

Application team generally installs Oracle software in server. Sometime system administrators also install Oracle software in server. Means sometimes Oracle DBA doesn’t install Oracle software in system and installation task is done by some another technical groups.

Same scenario is happening in new database creation. Either application team or some another technical group creates new database for application testing. This type of database creation is having only default parameters and configuration.

Above all tasks are main responsibility of Oracle Database Administration. Means these all tasks are being performed by Oracle DBA. But major in cases, these tasks are being performed by another technical group instead of Oracle DBA.

In above both cases, there is lot of chance that default installation and default database creation are performed. Means Enterprise Edition of Oracle is installed but actually it doesn’t require. Default database is created with default parameters and security settings. Client doesn’t know what actual requirement is.

Mean client can have Oracle Enterprise Edition and actually his requirement doesn’t match with Enterprise Edition. After investigating database analysis and real requirement of client we can say that he can use Oracle standard version. Sometimes only few features of Enterprise Edition have been used in application database. Those can be implemented in standard edition also using some another way. Take one example of Standby database. In Oracle Enterprise Edition, automatically log shipping available. But in Oracle Standard edition there is no feature for automatically transferring of archive logs to standby database. But we can deploy this feature in Oracle Standard edition using scheduled shell scripting or scheduled batch files. Means we can say using some tricks we can avoid Oracle Enterprise Edition licensing.

Because costing of Oracle Enterprise Edition is more than Oracle Standard Edition. But due to lack of knowledge or missing client’s requirement detail analysis, client is being charged high costing of Oracle Enterprise Edition. Installation was done by those vendors, who didn’t analysis client need and application database usage.

According to Dbametrix analysis of clients, more than 50 percent cases found which are spending more Oracle licensing charges due to lack of detail analysis of database structure, server configuration and client requirements.
