Microsoft did better than Facebook ?

It seems Google is once again getting the better of the competition. Not too long ago there were whispers that Facebook was the new traffic game in town; but now it seems, the big “G” has got her mojo back.

According to a Wall Street Journal report, Google had a record breaking 1.009 billion unique visitors across all its websites. The numbers as trackedGoogle 1 Billion Uniques by Comscore, are a sober reminder to all web developers that despite Facebook having a strong social crowd, search traffic is still a force. Of course, Facebook still had a good showing over the same May reporting period; recording a whopping 714 million unique visitors. Microsoft did better than Facebook, clocking in at 905 million, but those uniques, are aggregated across all its sites.

Despite these impressive numbers, there are some who would tell you that search traffic is not all that it once was. A large number of searches for instance, are carried out inside Youtube itself. So one wonders what percentage of that 1.009 billion, are actually searches on video. Google on other search engines will always be skewed towards a “better user experience”, and somewhere in that mix, lies the web developer, trying to eek out an existence.

I suppose the lesson here is that we can still take comfort in the fact that people are still actively using the search engines to gather information. This is god news, because the one positive and enduring thing about “search” is that you can always measure “intent”. Take a look at the video below for some more analysis.
