Span of Control
The number of people that a manager can govern or manage to increase efficiency varies from industry to industry. This concept is termed as Span of Control. With efficient and righteous leadership skills you can acquire the best results.
In the IT industry, every employee needs to be handled separately hence a manager can lead only a small group of employees. On the other hand when several workers work in an industry, a single manager handles hundreds of employees. Depending on the nature of work, a manager is assigned who can manage a swift transaction with the employees.
Another criterion for appointing a manager is the skills attached. A person well versed with infrastructure may not be able to lead a team of retail. Thus according to the qualifications and specializations the manager can be delegated.
A wide span of control reduces
expenses, but requires more management skill and may reduce effective feedback.
When the job is easy and does not need much attention or assistance then it is
not required that a manager look into their every step. If there is a large
span of control, which means one manager to control many, then the level of
hierarchy reduces. With small span, the hierarchy levels increase and there are
many levels of middle and senior management.
Assigning control does not mean intruding at every step and when the span is wide, it does not mean being very lenient. A balance between the two is required for efficient functioning.
