How to Create Great Brochures: Tips & Tutorial

A big mistake many newbie designers usually made is that they are not wary of the dimensions. The design that has been done may look good, however, but on paper, there may be no room to bleed. This is difficult to be exact with the print sizes, but most designers tend to keep at least half inch space from both the side. For example, if the size of the paper is 5x8, an experienced designer will keep it to 4.5x7.5. By doing so, they leave some room for the brochure to bleed.

The blades that are used for cutting the paper are extremely accurate and there is little chance that the blade will alter the size that has been provided. But however, if the ink is over the size, the blade may run over it, making the design look bad.

Use high resolution design
A design that looks good on your computer may not have the same outcome on paper. This is because your computer screen rectifies the resolution. A 72dpi design may look wonderful on your computer, but remember the design has to be at least 300 dpi when it is printed. By this you can understand that the design needs to be more than four times richer.

Choose the right Paper
Choosing the right paper is one of the intermediary task of brochure design. The papers are measured in grams. There are 60gsm papers and there are even 140gsm papers. 80gsm papers are more widely used. They are standard and the papers are thick enough to make a great structure for your design. There are more papers that come in matte, and some are glossy. Some papers are also waterproof, but they are very expensive. If your budget is not that high, you may just stick to the 80gsm papers. But however, if you are targeting a niche market, you might want to have a better quality paper.

Creating a unique and original work
Copying someone else’s work not only falls under plagiarism, but will also create a negative impression about you in the market. If you cannot produce a unique design for your brochure, how will you provide them with the uniqueness in productivity. Try to include your original design. If you are not capable of coming up with a design by yourself, then hire a designer. If you can pay thousands in printing costs for the brochures, can’t you pay a few hundred for the design of the brochure? After all, what good the numerous amount of prints is if the designs are not good or appreciated?

Choose the colors and the fonts wisely
Design by keeping the targeted audience in the head. If your targeted audience are old people, your design may be in shabby colors. If your targeted audience is teenagers, you can play with the colors. Do not use too many fonts. Try to stick with one or two fonts. A color and font combination blend that looks good on your screen might not look the same when you are printing them. You might have noticed, that I have said this line three times. You can imagine the magnitude of importance of this statement.
