Govt puts a check on telecom equipment imports
With the government skeptical with regards to imported telecom equipment in the face of rising security concerns, domestic manufacturing
is all set to receive a significant boost. The move has come close on
the heels of government discontinuing the services of telecom service
provider S Tel in Himachal Pradesh, Bihar and Orissa on similar
grounds; it has now focused its attention towards telecom equipment
imports.
The government is imposing stricter measures on telephone operations in view of the security concerns. As part of the process the government intends to carry out security check on all telecom equipments in a specialized laboratory prior to importing them into the country. The Ministry of Home Affairs, intelligence agencies and domestic security agencies are of the opinion that some telecom operators are cleverly infiltrating telecom networks via remote login facilities and Trojan horses to disturb the domestic network from abroad.
According to industry analyst, given the rising instances of terror attacks in our country, it is very important for the government to cover all the loopholes as far as security issues are concerned.
With the government curbing the import of telecom equipments, domestic manufacturers of such products, comprising mainly of SMEs are positive about witnessing a growth in their business in the near-term. According to a mid-sized telecom infrastructure development company, with restriction on imports, the domestic telecom equipment manufacturers will receive more orders.
Small and mid-sized manufacturers of telecom equipment have a remarkable opportunity at hand to further grow their business. This would not only help them to earn more revenues, but also give them more industry exposure.
