Wow ! It Works well in 400kV environment...

Metrel performed measurements with HV products in a 400 KV switchyard in Divača

Modern technologies bring a lot of new materials, elements and goods for greater comfort and well-being. Electricity is one of them. But it is useful and safe only when it is kept within cables, windings, etc., and when it is under certain degree of control. Otherwise it can be useless and dangerous.

What should we worry about?

·        safety of people and animals

·        fire precautions

·        good working conditions

The main problems occur during its application when connections and junctions weaken or get damaged, whereas dust and humidity accumulate on insulated surfaces, causing new low ohm paths for leakage currents.

Conductors and transformers start to overheat, and hazardous contact voltages occur on conducting parts.

In order to avoid these problems insulation tests have to be carried out periodically. With periodic testing of insulation we ensure the protection against electric shock, safety of people and animals, and fire safety. First test of insulation quality before connecting new or repaired equipment is important as well.

Metrel produces professional instruments for insulation resistance measurements. In 400 KV switchyard in Divača we performed measurements with the instruments TeraOhm 10 kV MI 3200 and TeraOhm 5 kV MI 2077. Measurements were carried out in real-life environment, in extreme conditions with high level of air humidity.

Firstly, the measurements were performed with shielded cables and then with standard cables. At the beginning we measured the electromagnetic field strength. The result on site was 12 kV/m of electric field strength. Tests were performed with instruments put on the reinforced concrete ground, which was well earthed, and later also on a trolley, approximately 0.5m above the ground. Test leads were put in a parallel and perpendicular position with 400kV conductors. Results of measurements performed with shielded cables were significantly better than those with standard cables (less deviation).

Final conclusion of the above mentioned measurements is that the instruments measure more accurately with shielded cables, which were approximately 0.5m above the ground (on a trolley) in a 400kV switchyard in Divača, than with standard cables under the same conditions.

With the above test we performed at the electrical switchyard the technical individuals are very confidant that this equipment shall work in the high induction environment also.
