Oxygen sensors and their uses
To measure the proportion of oxygen in the gas or liquid for analysis is known as an oxygen sensor. In 1960s, it was developed by the Robert Bosch GmbH company under the supervision of Dr. Günter Bauman. Using a thimble shaped zirconia ceramic coated on both sides with a thin platinum layer the original sensing element was made. It comes in both heated and unheated forms.
For measuring oxygen, there are many different ways such as electrochemical, infrared, zirconia, ultrasonic and very recently laser methods. Each method has its own pros and cons.
These days oxygen sensors are available in the market in a wide range of variety. They are basically used to measure the proportion of oxygen in the gas or liquid for analytical purposes. Using a thimble shaped zirconia ceramic coated on both sides with a thin platinum layer the original sensing element was made. It is available in heated as well as unheated forms.
The most common application of these sensors is measurement of the exhaust gas concentration of oxygen and was effectively used for internal combustion engines in automobiles and other vehicles. Deep sea divers also use a similar kind of device in order to measure the partial pressure of oxygen in their breathing gas.
O2 sensors are very useful to fight against pollution and in internal combustion of engine to adjust the amount of fuel and to compensate the excess air or excess fuel in the vehicle and these sensors should be update again and again as if it gets old it slows down and output voltage may turn up to be high.
To know the o2 content in the air or liquid, same as the co2 sensor o2 sensors are also available. To find the level of oxygen in automobile engines, the application of these o2 sensors are used, and also checks the pressure of o2 in breathing gas. Also used in medical field, O2 sensors are well used. These sensors help in the measurement of O2 level in anesthesia monitors, respirators, and oxygen concentrators. Many other industries also uses O2 sensors and it has many advantages such as these sensors are small and give accurate measurement, are made of stain steel, output signal, and this can be used under high temperatures and pressures.
In all cars which are manufactured in United States, oxygen sensors (O2 sensors) are used widely. In some other countries they are also extensively used in cars which are manufactured. The car runs differently when an oxygen sensor in your car gets spoilt. In US, this is a fact that oxygen sensor play a major role in the cars. The mileage may vary big time with the spoiling of oxygen sensors.
