Computer Password: What You Need to Know
Passwords delivers the basic protection for our important information on computer. When it refers to computer password, most users will think of the login passwords set on Windows to protect your PC from prying eyes. But do you know that you can also set a BIOS password, screensaver password in addition to the Windows login password? Here lists some passwords you can set for your computer.
1. Windows Login password
Nearly every PC user know that he/she can set a Windows login password to stop unauthorized users from viewing the computer data without permission. To do this, just go to Start button -> Control Panel -> Family Safety and User Accounts -> User Accounts, next click create a password for your account to set a Windows login password if you have previously created a user account on your computer. If not, you can create your Windows user account at first. And Windows 7/Vista/XP allows you to create password reset disk for remembering the password information sothat you can reset your password easily if you forgot Windows password. Unfortunately, most users ignore this feature and have to use a Windows password recovery tool when they forgot Windows password and locked of their PCs.
2. Screensaver password
You can not only set up a login password on Windows, but also a screensaver password that locks your computer when the screen saver is on. This password is helpful when you just need to step away from your PC for a while, but not want to shut down the computer. Go to the Start button -> Control Panel -> Appearance and Personalization -> Personalization -> Screen Saver. After that, select the On resume, require logon check box, set a time after which to start the screen saver, and then click Apply. If you want to change your screen saver password, you just need to change your Windows login password as the screen saver password is the same as the Windows login password.
3. BIOS password
A BIOS password refers to authentication information that is sometimes required to log into a computer’s basic input/output system (BIOS). It will appear when the computer is booting. If you don’t know this password, the computer will not be allowed to boot at all unless. This is one of the more secure methods of password protecting a computer. To create a BIOS password, all you need to do is enter your computer’s CMOS setup and enter a system password.
4. Picture Password
If you’ve have ever been concerned about the news of Microsoft upcoming operating system, you should know that Microsoft adds picture password as a supplement to the traditional text password in Windows 8. You can select your own personal picture and sketch three different patterns over the picture as your picture password to login Windows 8.
In reality, you can also enable biometric password in Windows. In Windows 7, you are able to set up fingerprint. And in Windows 8, you can even set up PIN logon.
