Mistake in Appriasal Letter will let you down

Hi Friends, One of my best friends got good offer in other company where he is working currently with a HR Consulting Company for more than 2+yrs.However the big challenge that he is facing from the Management is 1.3yrs back he got a appraisal stating "Your Salary has been increased to 10000/- from September 2008 and Your monthly revenue generation will be this much (Some Amount) from Sep 2007.

My Friend Happily accepted the appraisal letter with over joy and he did not find the error which is highlighted above in Red colour 7
On the request of offered company he requested the Director of his Current Company to replace that letter with new one stating Sep 2008.But the Director refused to do so and moreover he Over - Wrote the number 8 with his ink pen.

His Statement:This is not a legal document and it will be valid because i have changed this number as 8 from 7 and ask your offered company to do a reference check with me

Offered Company Statement:Reference check will be done later but we want the proper documents first

My friend try to convince his Director on the same but it did not materialised. He is the good worker and has done good business to the company and has good support from his Manager also

Now he is worried about his offer.
Does this appraisal letter will be valid or not?
What is the guarantee to the employees who shows longevity in the organisation?
