editricon Ensuring Values in your organization

Leaders need to manage organizations based on a core set of values. Leaders can repeat the values over and over to the organization but ensuring the values are followed cannot be done by leader alone.

It is better to have someone in charge of the values the Leader stands for.

A few years back I used to visit a doctor's office. This was a very small office that serves a local community. This doctor gave very high importance to cleanliness of the small hospital. For this reason, there is someone in charge of this job: ensure cleanliness throughout the day. I used to see one person whose job is to watch every speck of dust and cleanup immediately. This person is not loaded with any other responsibility. This ensured that the value is kept without being compromised at any time.

Lot of times, keeping values are additional responsibilities for someone who has functional responsibilities too. They are so much focused on ensuring they complete their functional responsibilities properly that their ability to ensure values is left to their passion about it.

To avoid this problem, leaders should list down list of their values and should be able to identify one person whose sole responsibility is to keep up the values

In my opinion, ensuring everyone follows values just by training them will not be sufficient. Instead of Functional Manager think of introducing Value Manager who is given responsibility of monitoring through the organization to monitor how values are upheld.

This is a new way of ensuring values and I would like to see this experimented and share experiences later on this blog.
