Difference between AVI and XviD, XviD VS DivX

Several days ago, one of my friends ask me about how to make a difference among these three video "formats": AVI, XviD and DivX. These three formats always confuse us. After reading some references, i would like to share my knowledge about them.

About AVI:
AVI (Audio Video Interleave) is a multimedia container format introduced by Microsoft in November 1992 as part of its Video for Windows technology. AVI, one of container, contains only information that describes how to store the data in file and how to decompress the video and the audio (which codecs to use for these purposes).

AVI is the most common format for audio/video data on the PC. With the introduction of DirectShow, AVI became a very flexible and powerful architecture. Some newer codecs including DivX and XviD enable AVI files to have similar or even better quality than DVD. However, those files encoded by XviD or DivX share the same extension-.avi.

DivX:
DivX is a codec that has grown in popularity due to its adaptation of the lossy encoding mechanisms that allows files to be substantially smaller without experiencing a substantial degradation in the picture. When encoding data, the user can set specifics on how compressed the file should be, though it should always be remembered the smaller you compress the file, the more data is lost. The encoded data is then stored in a container format like AVI.

What is XviD?

XviD is the name of a popular new video codec being developed as an open source project by volunteer programmers from all over the world. The format was created to offer a free alternative to other commercial video codecs, and despite being open source its quality and efficiency has made it one of the most popular video codecs online.

XviD VS DivX:
In summary, XviD can produce superb video with very sharp detail, however,DivX video have average quality: a lot of blocky and fuzzy artifacts around the edges of objects.

Pros of XviD: Free, excellent image quality, support in consumer electronics devices, good encoding speed.
Pros of DivX: Good encoding speed, support in consumer electronics devices.

Tips: AVI video editing software
For Windows OS, Windows Movie Maker should be an excellent assistant. If your .avi files can not be imported into WMM, you would better download AVI codec firstly. Then load it into Movie Maker. Alternatively, directly convert AVI to Windows Movie Maker acceptable video formats such as WMV by using Video Converter.

However, if your PC works on Mac OS, the AVI seems to be unfriendly to most of common video player or editor like QuickTime, FCE, or FCP, etc. You can free download the AVI video Editor for Mac to edit AVI files on Mac OS X.
