Orientation is also known as Induction. It is done after the employee joins in a company and introduction is provided to all of them about the rules and regulations of the company and newly joined employees get an opportunity to meet the Top management people of the company. It also provides the information which he or she needs to understand the company in a better way. Orientation can be termed as “planned introduction of employees to their jobs, their co-workers and the organization”. The company can plan the layout of the orientation, as after meeting the top management of the organization the employees can meet their team leader and can understand their area of operation and work possibilities. The details can be easily transmitted to them when the employees personally meet the respective managers under whom they have to work and it also gives a direct and efficient platform to the employees to interact freely with their immediate superiors.

 

Orientation can last for a day or two days or more, depends on the type of company and the type of work undertaken by the employee. A firm has to choose between four strategies of orientation: Formal or Informal, Individual or Collective, Serial or Disjunctive and Investiture or Divestiture.

 

Formal or Informal: In formal orientation, the organization structures the plan of the orientation and acts according to that only. In informal orientation, new hires are directly put on the jobs and they are expected to mix up themselves with the work and the organization. The choice between formal or informal depends on the management goals and the level of the organization.

 

Individual or Collective: The difference can be seen in the name only, whether the orientation is to be done individually of each and every new employee or the orientation to be undertaken in the group of all the new employees.

 

Serial or Disjunctive: Serial orientation acts as a classroom where the new employee listens to the rule book of the organization and the top management is only delivering the speech. On the other hand if both of them acts as a team. It helps the employee and the organization to know better.

 

Investiture or Divestiture: When a person joins the top management directly, they tend to adopt the Investiture orientation. Divestiture orientation, seeks to make some changes in the characteristics of the new hire, albeit, he or she was selected on the basis of their potential for performance.

 

So, the first day introduction helps the new employee to explore the office in a better way, and he/she is aware of to whom to approach for any kind of problem if any.

 

If I share my experience about the Companies where I joined and their orientation pattern; it was different for all the Companies. Going back in memory lane I recollect that there was only 30 minutes orientation I got in my first job…lol…as days passed I understood the work completely and then next job the orientation in next organization remained for two days followed by 15 days training and in one company there was only one day orientation and ya, don’t even ask about my present company….lol…

 

So, it is very clear that if the orientation is planned very well then the employee plans their long term career with the company
