20 day CAT, aspirants still skeptical
The poll results show that a large number of MBA aspirants are still very skeptical after having seen the performance of test executing agency Prometric, and the indifferent attitude of the IIMs towards the fate of test takers last year.
To gauge the comfort level of MBA aspirants vis a vis the test taking experience, the Siliconindia.com Poll raised the question: "Will the 20 day test window for CAT 2010 make it glitch free?". The results are now out with 209 responses registered.
The loud answer is 'No'. 49 per cent of the respondents to the poll think that CAT 2010 would not be much different than CAT 2009. Last year's CAT had given many sleepless nights to the test takers. It was the debut of the computer-based test in the CAT domain. Across the country servers had crashed at many test centers and test takers reported difficulties in navigating through the questions.
The poll results show that a large number of MBA aspirants are still very skeptical after having seen the performance of test executing agency Prometric, and the indifferent attitude of the IIMs towards the fate of test takers last year. CAT 2009 was originally scheduled for 10 days from November 28 to December 7, 2009. But due to technical snags, the test was extended till December 8, 2009. But when even that was not much ensuring for the CAT 2009 takers and IIMs, a second phase of exam was held for two days, on January 30 and 31, 2010. Several re-tests and rescheduling took place to cover up the glitches.
The poll somehow provides some relief to the CAT 2010 organizers as 39 per cent of the respondents think that this time the computer-based test would be certainly glitch-free. This high percentage can be attributed to the major changes this CAT season: The test window has been increased to 20 days; IIM Lucknow has taken the charge from IIM Ahmedabad to conduct CAT 2010; the test executing agency Prometric has changed its technology application partner from NIIT to MeritTrac and Everonn.
Prometric, the testing agency that conducts the computer based CAT exams are hopeful that CAT 2010 will be glitch free and a smoother experience than CAT 2009. Both IIMs and Prometric claim to have learnt their lessons from last year's CAT and this year they aim to offer a seamless testing experience to the CAT 2010 takers. Conducting CAT in a 20 day window is one of those steps.
According to Prof. Himanshu Rai, CAT 2010 Convener, "Extending the window from 10 day to 20 day was a conscious decision in order to keep a buffer space." Also in an exclusive interview with Siliconindia.com Soumitra Roy, MD, Prometric India had said, "The extended test window will give the test takers more choice to choose the test date."
CAT 2010 has been scheduled for a 20 day testing window between October 27 and November 24, 2010.
