IIM-C first play outside campus walls

The play, part of IIM Calcutta's Golden Jubilee Celebrations, will star students from IIM Calcutta's Dramatics Cell.

On February 12, 2011 the students of IIM Calcutta set to stage their first ever play to be held outside the campus walls for public viewing. The play is an adaptation of a Jerome Bixby thriller.

The play, part of IIM Calcutta’s Golden Jubilee Celebrations, will star students from IIM Calcutta’s Dramatics Cell. This play, like all other plays by the cell, is put together by the students entirely– be it screenplay, casting, acting, direction, costumes or set design.

Titled “Who the hell is John?” the play will be staged on two days in Vidya Mandir, a 700 seater auditorium in the heart of Kolkata. Based on the last story ever written by the famous sci-fi writer – Jerome Bixby, the play opens with a farewell party organized for a Professor, which soon becomes interesting as he decides to reveal to them a secret he has held closely guarded for ages.

The Dramatics Cell is one of the oldest clubs of IIM Calcutta and also the most prestigious. The Cell is an exclusive band of students, chosen after long selection processes from the incoming freshmen batch every year.

“Dramatics is an institution at IIM Calcutta,” said Karan Kalia, the president of IIM Calcutta’s Dramatics Cell. “For most students in the Cell, dramatics is a life-long passion. Every play staged is a result of meticulous preparation and intense hours of practice.”

The Cell has been staging plays of professional quality for many years, but none have been open to the public so far, added another student. To commemorate IIMC’s Golden Jubilee year and in keeping with the Golden Jubilee theme ‘Knowledge is for all’, the students decided to make the play open for public viewing, in the spirit of sharing ideas and opinions
