PGDM or MBA: PGDM at par, in fact better

Which is a better choice to make – PGDM or MBA? This question is probably the number one question on the Q-list of aspirants desirous of entering a B-school to pursue a management programme. It is extremely difficult to say which of the two is more superior, as students from both categories are occupying top positions in varied organizations.

Sharing his views on this, Fr. PT Joseph, Director, XIMB said, “PGDM programmes are superior especially due to their contemporary approach, flexible modules and industry relevance whereas the MBA programmes suffer from outdated syllabi and lack of customized approach for a particular segment of students. The PGDM programmes are dynamic in nature while MBA programmes due to their affiliation to Universities are marred by bureaucratization.”

Voting in favor of PGDM and pointing to some of the advantages of PGDM, Dr. P.V.Ramana, Chairman, ITM Group of Institutions said, “Except for a few MBA courses like JBIMS or FMS Delhi, most university courses are ranked below PGDM. Although PGDM programmes are costlier, but you can recover that cost once you join a service.”

Anup K. Singh, Director, Jaipuria Institute of Management, Noida agreed that PGDM programmes truly have edge over MBA. He said, “PGDM programmes seem to have edge over an MBA programme in India because of their autonomous, innovative, value adding features.”

Offering a different perspective, Dr. Seema Singh Zokarkar, Director, BIMM Pune said, “Such comparisons are not desirable and are not correct. Under the laws only Universities can offer MBA degrees and many of them are delivering results like FMS Delhi, PUMBA Pune. At the same time, it is the IIMs which are offering PGDM program and are the most prestigious Management institutes in India.”

Dr Ginlianlal Buhril, Dean, AICAR Business School, Mumbai said, “The word ‘superior’ may not be an appropriate word here. Or perhaps I could be personally biased here. However, in terms higher Industry acceptance, in terms of better quality input and output regarding Course design, implementation and delivery the PGDM Course would hold a significant edge over the MBA. The student’s acceptance in terms of quality could be much higher too.”
