A common myth about group discussion is that the one who initiates and concludes GD get more weightage. Initiating GD on a topic you are unfamiliar to, will only reduce your chances.

If non-participation ruins your chances, speaking a lot may also land you in trouble. People generally think ‘dominator rules’ in GD, however reality is just contradictory to this. One of the main motives to GD is to judge a candidate’s team skills’, thus dominating does not help in any way.

1. Your ability to analyze your point will surely bring you in the limelight. Thus, think twice before you speak and speak material, as ambiguous thoughts and ideas will only push you away from your goal.

2. Another trick that pays during a GD is your team skills. An able manager is one who can be an efficient team player, one who knows how to drive other team members to arrive at a common goal.

3. It is often seen that group discussion exercise becomes a chaotic fish market. A million dollar advice is, if your GD room becomes a messy space, ‘dance on the chance’, never miss the opportunity to bring it back to stream—let everybody have their fair chance to speak.

4. Your ability to convince others should show. Put your points firmly and always try to get others opinion too.

5. Jot down the points you have to speak on and build a background for it. Jumping in between with a point which is far away from what is being discussed may land you in an embarrassing situation.

6. Be a good listener. This may help you understand an unfamiliar topic and collect some points to speak on.

7. Wait for your right turn…prioritize your points.
