IIM Lucknow’s campaign starts off Earth Hour Week in Lucknow

‘Earth Hour’ is part of the World Wildlife Fund’s (WWF) initiative that began in Sydney in 2007 as a one-city campaign when over two million people switched off their lights for an hour to convey their support for action on climate change. In 2008 the campaign went global with over 50 million people in 371 cities across 35 countries taking part. In 2009 more than 4,000 cities and towns, 20,000 companies, 8,000 schools, 5,500 organizations in 88 countries participated in Earth Hour, which reached nearly one billion people This year Chief Minister of Delhi Smt Sheila Dixit and Abhishek Bachchan, Brand Ambassador for WWF officially launched the Earth Hour Campaign on 10th March 2010.

Taking the concept forward Interest Group in Food and Agri-Business (IGFAB) , IIM Lucknow, conducted an awareness campaign about saving electricity in association with World Wildlife Fund (WWF). This is the first time earth hour campaign is being celebrated in Lucknow.

The event started by switching off all the public lights at 7:30 pm for 15 minutes on 21st March, 2010 throughout the campus. This was then followed by a candle light march in which students, staff and faculty members actively participated. They took an oath to protect Mother Earth, to reduce pollution, and conserve energy. Simultaneously IGFAB also conducted an event at the well known shopping mall, Saharaganj. The event mainly included a video presentation to sensitize the people about the need to save electricity so as to prevent global warming and its disastrous effects on human life.
