Australia is home to the heaviest cockroach, the Giant Burrowing Cockroach that weighs in at around 50 grams. They are wingless and often mistaken for beetles.

The life cycle involves incomplete metamorphosis. The eggs are either laid close to a food source or are carried by the parent until they hatch. Roaches do not form colonies the way termites or ants do but they often live in groups. They prefer warm and damp places. Roach activity is usually highest at night.
