Does Men in Blue need standalone terror insurance ?
The Board of Control for Cricket in
India (BCCI) may have been among the first cricketing institutions to express
outrage over Tuesday’s unprecedented terror strike on the Sri Lankan cricket
team in Lahore in which six cricketers were injured, but guess what? The Indian
cricket team does not appear to have a standalone terror cover.
For lay readers, a standard cover means an equal sum assured for each cricket
team member regardless of seniority. The sum assured refers to the money
payable in case of an accident. This cover, which was bought only a few months
ago, also covers BCCI staffers.
Oriental Insurance chairman and managing director M Ramadoss told ET: “We have
provided a standard cover for the Indian cricket team and BCCI staffers, where
the sum assured for every member of the group is the same. It is a personal
accident policy that includes acts of terrorism. But I am not sure if the
players themselves have bought any covers on their own from any other insurance
company. If any of them have, they would be covered by that policy.”
Though details of the policy covering the national cricket team were not
available, a standard personal accident insurance cover from Oriental Insurance
provides compensation in the event of the insured sustaining injuries, solely
and directly from an accident caused by violence, visible and external means,
resulting in death or disablement , be it temporary or permanent.
Traditionally, cricket matches in India are covered for match cancellation due
to terror strikes. For instance, last year, during the Indian Premier League
(IPL), each of the eight franchisees insured matches with sum assured ranging
between Rs 4 crore and Rs 16 crore — and these included a whole host of
unforeseen incidents including terrorist attacks at one extreme to flash floods
on the other.
