SMART EXECUTIVES and NAVARASA

Management Consultant
Once, during my AVERY days, I had an unusual experience.   I was given an appointment with a Colonel to finalize purchase requirement of weighing machines.  I have met him several times and found  him as an officer and gentleman. In the process we had developed good rapport. That eventful day, as any sales person would, I too was in an anticipatory jubilant mood on account the high values order I am to receive on that day.  I reached the Colonel’s office five minutes ahead of the appointed time. But I was greeted with a shock of my life, listening to the Colonel in terribly angry mood shouting at his subordinate on his full throat.  To me, the sound was like a roaring lion, ready to pounce on his literarily shivering subordinate. I felt like every drop of water in me has run out making me pale and shivering. With out knowing about what to do, I just turned and quickly walked towards my Enfield BULLET, empty minded.   I must have moved a yard or two towards my bike, just then I heard few claps from behind and calling me, “ Nandu, where are you going?”. I turned back and saw smiling Colonel in his usual cool mood.  I replied, “Sorry Sir, for disturbing you in this peak work hours. I shall meet you some other time.”   Then I looked at my watch. It was sharp appointed time. “ No…No…NO... come…come..come…” Colonel reassured me.

He made me sit comfortably and then asked, “ Nandu, why did you try to go back, I had promised on this appointment? “ Yes Sir, but, I thought you are in a different mood,” trying to recoup my strength. To my surprise, He laughed loudly for a moment and then he said, “Tell me Nandu, Did you get frightened?

I confessed that it  is true.  I even now keep thanking god for that great day. The Colonel taught me about NAVARASA. Then, he continued with an advice, in administration too one officer has to demonstrate like a character played in a film or drama (Natyasastra - Science of acting) according to the situation that demands.  Especially when you are in time of anger one has practice that anger shall not disturb our body composure. It shall only start from the throat and end in the mouth. Nothing shall go above or below that area.

The Natyasastra identifies nine rasas ('juice' or 'essence') with corresponding individual Bhava (mood). Every human being experience changes in his mood according to the situation he is in to any one listed under. Religious philosophies advocate that one shall not get affected on his body and mental composure on account of any of this. Such persons are identified as person with SELF CONFIDENCE.
