The power of External Customers

Management Consultant

Mahatma Gandhi's perception of GITA,has lot of significance in business point of view, because of his successful mission of impossible, ie, snatching the power from strong British is account of his unfailing faith in management principles described in Gita. I found Mahatma's discourses very simple and easy to understand by a layman.

Mahatma has clearly spelled out the concepts removing all misunderstanding among the common man. He said, “The classic is nothing but a story of our mind. Every name used there has a Sanskrit scientific meaning related to human characteristics”.

“No knowledge is to be found without seeking, no tranquility without travail, and no happiness except through tribulation. Every seeker has,at one time or another, to pass through a conflict of duties, a heart-churning”.

“The human body is the battlefield where the eternal duel between right and wrong goes on. Therefore it is capable of being turned into a gateway to Freedom. It is born in sin and becomes the seed-bed of sin. Hence it is also called the field of Kuru. The Kuravas represent the forces of Evil, the Pandavas the forces of Good. Who is there that has not experienced the daily conflict within himself between the forces of Evil and the forces of good?”

Mahatma Gandhi's perception of CUSTOMER

A customer is the most important visitor onour premises
He is not dependent on us, we aredependent on him
He is not an interruption inour work,

He is the purpose of it
He is not an outsider on our premises, he is part of it
We are not doing a favor by serving him,
He is doing us a favor by giving us an opportunity
A customer is not a person to argue with
No one ever has won an argument with a customer.

We are aware that Quality Management Standards are designed to enhance the organization’s ability for continual improvement and sustain in the market for long.

In the process, wholehearted co-operation of internal customers and external customers is inevitable.

New ways and means are being worked out, all over the world, to satisfy these two customer segments.

Have a look ‘Ramayana’ and ‘Mahabharata’ as a story discounting religious tags attached to it; instead let’s look at those stories on Quality Management point of view.

The power of a Competent Management Consultant

When I think about story of Mahabharata,it reminds me of feud between Ambani Brothers and the subsequent role played by their mother and Mr. Kammath, former ICICI Chairman.

The significance of the ‘Mahabharata’ story lies in the distinctly different roles played by board of directors and an effective management consultant. Whilst one group went after influencing the board of directors and work force, other group decided to abide by the advice of an effective management consultant; who is well conversant with strength, weakness, opportunities and threats of the industry as well as had his credentials in HR.

The consultant having won the game for his side, that man Mr.Krishna, became an instant hero.

‘Gita’ is a genuine quality procedure manual where Plan-Do- Check-Act is efficiently and effectively documented on each of systems and processes of human psychology whilst dealing with a competitor or while dealing with an internal feud.

The only other comparable quality procedure manual available in this world may be ‘The Constitution of India'. To understand ‘Gita’ better it is worth comparing the said manual with Constitution of India.

The power of External customer to an organization:

The story of ‘Ramayana’,is a story of suffering of a designated CEO. Mr. Rama enjoyed 100% of unfailing loyalty of his internal customers from the Chairman to the workers and further from the local residents as well. It was on account of external customer; a lady called Mrs.Mandhra. Mr. Rama had to undergo extreme sufferings for 14years. He could not get his organization going. The only consolation he had is that he could depend on his competent & loyal MBA step brother as a stop-gap arrangement to run the organization.

Mr. Rama’s condition would have been even worse; perhaps the story, at its beginning itself would have become insignificant in the absence of his god mother (here usage is similar to god father) called Mrs.Sumitra. She was Mr. Rama’s step mother. The most touching incident in the story; is about‘a mom’s sacrifice’. The Mrs. Sumitra calls her son Mr. Lekhman, and asks him to accompany Mr. Rama with an advice; which is unparalleled in history of the entire world. She said, “my son, consider Mr. Rama as equal to your own father, Mr. Dasharadh; see me in your sister-in-law Mrs. Sita; The forest as their kingdom Ayodhya and be with them till they return after the 14 years of forest life.” What a genuine wife and mother she is. In the process Mrs Sumitra was obliging to her husband’s predicament as well as ensuring safety of her husband’s son born out of another lady; by delegating the responsibility to her son with specific, efficient, and effective WORK INSTRUCTION.

Family tradition is born in India envied by every one else where!Divine Mother concept got its firm root with divine status for all women for their unquestioned will power, dedication and management acumen.

Mrs. Sumitra, was demonstrating true picture of ideal wife, a mother and a manager’s factual approach to decision making.

Vandematharam!

The whole of Indian civilization revolved around logic of Mrs.Sumitra. It is on her account Indians believed in harmony in family with elder most takes over the reign from deceased chieftain. Hindu undivided family act (HUF) even today is very relevant as per Indian constitution.

The ultimate essence of these two stories put together is that howone can accomplish the harmony among the holy trinity- mind- body- soul; Generator-operator- destroyer; Knowledge- Skill- Attitude; Supplier- Organization- Customer;Planning- implementation- control; Hardware- Software- Information; so on..Quality is an attitude of mind!
