To the ear of educators: Pygmalion works

In the classroom there were two students who had the same surname: Urdaneta. One of the Urdaneta, the youngest, was a real headache for the teacher, undisciplined, widely applied in their studies, form of lawsuits. The other Urdaneta, however, was an exemplary student.
Following the meeting of representatives, a lady of fine manners presented to the teacher and the mother of Urdaneta. Believing that it was the mother of the diligent student, the teacher burst into praise and congratulations and repeated several times that it was a pleasure to have your child as a student.
The next morning, the unruly Urdaneta arrived very early at school and went straight in for his teacher. When found, he said, almost in tears: "Thanks for telling my mom that I was one of his favorite students and that it was a pleasure to me in his class. With what joy, told me mommy! How happy I was! I know so far I've been good but now I'm going to be. "
The teacher realized his mistake but said nothing. Only slightly smiled and patted the head of Urdaneta in a gesture of deep affection. The small Urdaneta totally changed since then and was really a pleasure to have in class.

The expectations we cherish towards a person they are communicating and are likely to become reality. This is what is known as the Pygmalion Effect. According to mythology, Pygmalion, legendary king of Cyprus, carved ivory statue of a woman so beautiful that she fell madly in love. He invoked the goddess Venus, who attended the prayers of the king in love, and the statue became a beautiful woman of flesh and bone. Pygmalion called Galatea, married and were very happy.
The myth of Pygmalion comes to mean that the expectations, positive or negative, will greatly influence the people with whom we interact. Hence the importance of positive expectations of our students. The ability to accept others as they are, and not wish they were, and to communicate such acceptance by words or gestures, is perhaps the main tool for positive change in the growth and development of the individual.
Different tests and investigations of Rosenthal have shown that teachers' expectations are one of the most powerful factors in school performance of students. If the teacher has positive expectations of their students, they are communicated and achieved these advances. The same if they are negative. If the teacher is convinced that his students, or any of them, are incapable, becomes incapable. As Fernando Savater says: "If you think your child is an idiot, and actually it is not, soon will be."
If, on the contrary, the teacher is convinced that you have in your living room a group of winners, the winners again. If the teacher has a positive self-esteem, value their work and is comfortable with himself, communicates to his students.
Tinnitus Miracle By contrast, the bitter teacher, without enthusiasm or hope, covers all educational activities in a cloak of pessimism and slows the learning of their students.
Avoid any word, gesture or opinion offensive. ("You're a useless, do not know anything wrong, as usual ...") always emphasized the positive, and above all do not want to ever leave your students. Wanting to students is not pandering or overwhelm them with illusory expectations that lead them to imagine they are the navel of the world. But it is interested in them, for their growth and overall development, its successes glad they are small and partial, and, above all, never lose faith or hope in them. The remarkable Russian pedagogue Makarenko, tells the story of a "criminal" that gradually was transformed, thanks to the cooperative and self-responsible. Later, however, relapse and flees with the money. Makarenko not reported to the police, and several months later, the thief returns, no one forces you to do so. Makarenko acts as if nothing had happened, and I trust a lot of money to go shopping in the city. The conflict was resolved automatically, without moralizing rhetoric. Morale was precisely the return of the "criminal" and the risk that Makarenko decided to run. This is not a "test", it is proof that the teacher did not see the thief as such, but as a person for whom any miracle is possible by the fact of being. Hence the need to look at the students always look into your heart.

Another story that illustrates the issue:

A university professor sent his sociology students from the slums of the city to study two hundred cases of male adolescents at risk. Asked to write an evaluation of the future of every boy. In all cases, the researchers wrote: "There is no chance of success."
Twenty years later, another professor of sociology previous study found and decided to continue it. To do this, he sent his students to investigate what had happened to the lives of those boys who, twenty years earlier, seemed to have so little chance of success. Except for twenty of them, who had gone away or died, the students discovered that almost all the others had achieved a success more than medium as lawyers, doctors and businessmen.
The professor was stunned and decided to go ahead with the investigation. Fortunately, it was not hard to locate investigated and could speak with each of them.
- How do you explain your success? -I was asking.
In all cases, the answer, full of feelings, was:
There was a special teacher ...
The teacher was still alive, so he sought and asked the old woman, but still lucid woman, what magic formula she had used to overcome those guys had so problematic situation in which they live and succeed in life.
The teacher's eyes sparkled and her lips outlined a pleasant smile:
'Actually, it is very simple - he said. All those guys were superb, loved them.
