UPSC civil services: A great gamble
UPSC civil services: A great gamble
Union Public Service Commission, India's highest recruitment & selection board takes civil services examination every year.
This exam is meant for most prestigious government services like IAS,IPS,IFS,IRS,IAAS and several others.
It takes a preliminary exam in the mid of May which contains a objective question paper of General Studies, & an optional paper which you can select from several optional subjects available. General studies paper carries 150 questions & optional paper contains 120 questions. Weightage of optional paper is more than general studies paper. After this it declares the result somewhere in the last week of July or first week of august. The selection is normally 10 to 15 times the number of posts i.e. for 400 posts , its around 4000-6000.
After this , the eligible candidates are eligible for appearing in the mains exams. The mains exam consists of total of 9 papers which consists 1 essay, 2 general studies( GS I & GS II) , 2 optional I paper, 2 optional II papers, 1 english & 1 hindi. Hindi & english papers are just to be passed , their marks is not included in the merit list.
Candidates with approx 3-4 times the number of posts are cleared in the mains exam who are then eligible to be apperared in the interview. Then after the interview, final merit list is preapred which is then used for allocating the various posts as per candidates preference.
For general category, there are 4 attempts, for OBC its 7, for ST/SC , its unlimited attempts upto the age of 35. For general age limit is 30.
This exam is known as the wrold's tuffest exam. Reason being the rigourous procedure, variety of subjects, number of candidates apperaing & the selection ratio. Every year approximately 3 lakhs candidates fill the form, out if which 1.5 to 1.75 lakh candidate actually appear in the exam. Out of this just about 8 percent clear the exams i.e. approx 8-10000. Then in the mains approx 1.5-2 percent clear the exam i.e. aprox 1500-2500 candidates. Out of which about 400-600 gets final selection of which a lucky few gets the IAS/IPS/IRS.
Today delhi has become the hub of UPSC although previuosly it had been allahabad. Coasching institutes like Vajiram & Ravi, Interactions, Ensemble, etc are doing well and earning most of the reveneue & students.
But UPSC is in reality a great gamble. If you succeed , you'll be getting clouds, but if not its something like you have to create a new life for you. If you succeed everything is yours, but if you don't succeed and even lefts out with few marks in final selction you are left with literaly nothing. you have wasted time, you have wasted money, you have burnt your other opportunities just to become an IAS.
Till the date of results you wander like a vagabond for the wildgoose chase competing with thousands of candidates, from north to south ,east to west, from evry part of India.
My suggestion to the candidates appearing for this exam is that first they should realise their potential. As its no more an exam of hardwork, but its now an exam of smartwork. Also first they should create options, create avebnues in case oif failure & a supportive kind of jobs to get ahead with the expenses of this exam.
In that case you will not be suffered from the frustration & the depression which normally do occurs in most of the candidates.
I agree that while working for something we should not think of failure but in case of this exam, things should be taken practically, and before starting preparing for this exam first think "If Not then What". And create an option in advance.
All the best...
