About my Hero
Hi, I am Naveen. I welcome you all once again to blogspot and this time I am very much
previliged to pen down on my tennis hero, ROGER FEDERER.
I would like to give you all a brief introduction on this philanthrope. Roger was born on
August 8th 1981. He's from a landlocked alpine country "Switzerland". As a boy, federer was
a very emotional player and was occasionally kicked off the tennis court for his erratic
behavior. He was a very good football player too. At one point of his life he had considered
becoming a professional soccer player but decided instead to pursue tennis. Its known that
Boris Becker, Stefan Edberg and Marcelo Rios are Fed's idols. Since 2000 Sydney olympics
he's dating Mirka Vavrinec(former WTA player). He considers swiss german as first language
, but also speaks German, French and English fluently and conducts press conferences in all
three with atmost ease. Thats one speciality which even media appreciate on him.
Roger Federer is highly involved in various charities. He established the Roger Federer
Foundation in 2003 to help disadvantaged people and to promote sports to youth. He was
appointed as a Goodwill Ambassador of UNICEF from 2006. Since then, he has visited TamilNadu,
one of the worst tsunami-affected areas in India, and South Africa. He has also appeared
in UNICEF public messages to raise public awareness of AIDS. This is the reason why I called
him as a "philanthrope" at the very beginning of his introduction.
Federer started playing tennis at the age of six. He also played football until the age of
twelve when he decided to focus solely on tennis. The history was in the making.
It was July 1998 when Federer won the major grandslam in the form of Junior wimbledon
championship. So it took 17 years for Roger to establish himself as a champion and he
deserved all the accolades he got from the greats of the game. The following two years were
pretty ordinary for fed as he couldn't sustain the competition from the likes of sampras and
Patrick Rafter. He didn't win even a single major title during that period. Till date Probably that
will stand as the only period where federer has struggled to win a major.
Scene 1:
It was in the year 2001, Federer played a 4th round match against 7 time wimbledon champion
pete sampras. It was pretty obvious that everyone put their money on pete sampras for winning
the championship just one more time. But there came the fedexpress, who emerged as a winner
of that match and thereby announcing the arrival of superhuman to the entire world.Federer
eventually won the championship in 2001.
In 2002 he ended up losing to Lleyton Hewitt in a semi-final clash. That is considered to
be the penultimate defeat that federer has suffered in wimbledon since then. From 2003 till
date he has been crowned as wimbledon champiion for 5 consecutive years. Which is indeed an
arduous effort and currently he has equalled Bjorn Borg's record of 5 consecutive titles.
If he wins this time then he'll become the first person to achieve the feat of winning the
cup for 6 straight years.
Its not just winning which has mattered to me to choose him as my inspiration. Its the way
he does it. As I told earlier, he was very emotional on court right from the start of his
career as a junior player. But he transformed his attitude for the betterment . Since 2002
I have never seen him losing his temper on court. I have never seen him showing disrespect
to the umpire. Even when umpires committed mistakes while making decisions on court. This
attitude is the speciality of this man and no other player(except for Rafael Nadal) has
portrayed such a positive attitude on court anytime till now. Even when things are not
going his way and down with dumbs he'll never lose his focus. His mental strength is amazing.
Perseverance is the best word which suits Roger's personality. Right now the game of tennis
is very lucky to have him and Nadal at the top. I think they both are excellent ambassadors
of the game. He carries out an excellent attitude off the court too.
I admire everything what fed does, he's such a perfectionist. So I reckon that having him as
an inspiration is the best way that I can think of improving my attitude towards life. I want
him to win this year's wimbledon and surpass Borg's record. c'mon Federer...You can do it!!!
