Dear members

As mentioned in the previous  post( please catch up  by going through the same), once the  body reachess a plateau, the weight watchers start looking for  wonder diets. There are many types of diets available on the net and many are prescribed by respective diet consultants.Broadly they can  be classified under following heads:

1) the  high fibre complex carbohydrate  diets.

2)The high protein diets

3) Soup and salads diets (plus / minus proteins) AND fruits/ fruit juice/ vegetable  juice and / or vegetable diets

4) Alternating protein and carbohydrate rich diets

5) the protein shake based diets

Now let  us analyze them  one by one:

1) The highfibre complex carb diet - this  diet is based on whole cereals and added fibre in  form of brans, salads, vegetables and fruits. This diet suits people who have  been earlier on a high protein and fibre defficient or  refined carbs diets , as ther is either chronic constipation or / and increased or erratic intake of carbs ( sometimes  more and some times  less) in such  people. This  is more or  less a good diet if  it is supplemented with proteins  from  milk or meat and eggs, but  proves to be protein defficient if the first class proteins are not added.

How it works: The mode of action of these diets is combination of :

a) more  fibre- more satiety- less calorie intake- fat being utilized for energy- weight loss

b) better insulin secretion in response to food due to the fibre present- less conversion of unburnt calories to fat-no further pilling of weight

c) Loss of body muscle as  this diet could  be  protein  defficient- weight loss

2) The high protein diets- these are the  most  popular diets with many celebrities. The diets are mostly  based on animal proteins and do not even allow fleshy vegetables and almost all fruits.

How it works- a) the immediate action of these diets is a rapid diuresis leading to substantial weight loss.

b) here is a  rapid metabolism of fat converting  it  into 'ketones' which are used for energy in liue of glucose . Ketones also reduce the appetite and thus aid lesser intake leading to further metabolism of fat.

c) part of the  proteins (and almost  negligible carbs) in the diet is used for energy making  less of it available for muscles to grow/ replenish - muscle loss- weight  loss

Though these diet are  well tolerated by a person  having normal kidney  function,  but there is irritability ( due to less carbohydrate available)and substantial hair  loss (due to decreased availability and absorption of amino acids in the absence of carbs).

3) Soup and salads diets (plus / minus proteins) & / or fruits/ fruit juice/ vegetable  juice and / or vegetable diets

- examples cabbage soup diet, tomato capsicum diet, pineapple diet and many other 'innovative' diets-

How they work- these are  basically  very  low cal diets and just rob  one  of the  liver glycogen,  muscle  glycogen,  induce diuresis ( increased frequency of  urination), muscle loss and some fat  loss ( yes SOME fat  loss as these diets cannot  be adhered to for  more than a week - your  body will revolt- so the stage of  ketosis is  only  partially reached, unlike  protein rich diets, before  one loads oneself  with food at the first  available oppurtunity- the post naturopathy centre  phenomenon!). So  most of the weight  loss acheived in these short term impositions  is majorly water  loss and  lean  body mass loss.

More  about no 4 and 5 in  the  next  post and also my opinion on the solution>>
