A look at a successful Student Internship Program in alliance business school

The Student Internship Program is a project-based course that takes place in Term IV (April-June) of the Academic Calendar at Alliance Business School. During this period, students are required to work in a business organization for six to eight weeks on a project related to their area of specialization. The internship is designed to integrate classroom instructions, career goals, and the work-related experiences of the organization. Students are expected to work on a live project which can either be an organizational study or an action-based research. Students are assisted by the Placement Office in securing these internship projects in companies located both in India and overseas. In 2006-07, a group of eight PGP II students of Alliance Business School (from the marketing, finance, and human resources specialization areas) recently completed projects in companies abroad. We are happy to bring to you excerpts of their work-related experiences in a new learning environment.

Jaspreet Singh Chahal (Marketing)

Name: JASPREET SINGH CHAHAL (MARKETING)
Company: Brokers Real Estate Group, Inc., Orlando, Fl. (USA).

“The key learning insights obtained from projects worked on at Brokers Real Estate Group, Inc, a real estate company based out of Orlando, was gaining valuable insights into the legal and marketing aspects of real estate markets in the United States in general and the regional market of Orlando in particular. I acquired first hand knowledge to process of buying, renting, and selling of properties in the Orlando region by carrying out a comparative market analysis for residential properties. It was great fun working in a new learning environment and I enjoyed the informal work culture of the company with its emphasis on thoroughness, flexible hours of work and casual dressing. For me, working in multicultural (American and Hispanic) corporate environment was a great learning experience in of itself.”

Vishanth H. (Finance)

Name: VISHANTH H. (FINANCE)
Company: PricewaterhouseCoopers, Dubai

“My student internship project at PricewaterhouseCoopers, Dubai focused on a Financial Due Diligence Review which is a must for any investor who is looking to make huge capital investments like the acquisition of a company or infusing large amounts of capital into a company over a period of time. This is an absolute necessity in any M&A situations. It is basically a review of the target company’s financial statements, internal accounts, its contracts, and its cost, revenue, and profitability projections. The objective of the project was to spot various potential issues and bring them to the investors’ notice. An international internship showed me how exciting it is to work in a multicultural organization.”

Sumith Sumithran (Human Resource Management)

Name: SUMITH SUMITHRAN (HUMAN RESOURCE MANAGEMENT)
Company: Bank Muscat, Oman

“My student internship was undertaken in the Bank Muscat where I was assigned a project on the study of human resource policies and procedures of the Bank. The most tangible learning outcome for me was the understanding of the working of the individual components of the human resource system of the Bank and how they correlated with each other to convert human resources into a strategic human resource for the Bank. An informal work atmosphere along with the presence of highly qualified and competent colleagues helped to make the best of my time at the Bank.”
