Making Our Company & Environment Green...

Hello Friends,

There are lots of go green tips for your workplace & home that can be found on the internet and in books at the library.I would like to share & discuss with you some tips & ideas to make our company & our planet a healthier place to live and to leave a positive impact on the environment.I think its high time that we should be aware of the negative impact that the human race & its lifestyle is making on our planet Earth.

Due to the recent changes in our economy many businesses are looking for ways to stretch their dollars. The best way to start is by recycling. Here are some easy-to-apply tips that you can apply at your workplace & home to make it environment friendly that will in turn help you in saving various energy resources.

1. Use Paper Wisely : This is the big one. Start printing documents double-sided, save scrap paper to make notes on, and of course, recycle whenever possible. If your company does correspondance with local clients using paper for e.g: paper bills, you can switch over from paper bills to e-bills.Move paper correspondence online, then go for it.

2. Turn off Monitors when not in use : Due to the increased use of computers in this IT age, plenty of electricity is being utilized and at the same time also wasted. We can make it a habit to turn off the monitors (not necessarily the computers*) while leaving workplace in order to save energy upto about 60-70%. *Many companies prefer using remote management to save on time.If you turn your computer off it means the IT guy will actually have to go to your machine to turn it on when they have updates or other maintenance to perform.

3. Use energy-efficient lighting : Replace incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent light (CFL) or light emitting diode (LED) bulbs. Both CFLs and LEDs give off less heat than incandescents, plus they last longer.

4. Join a carpool : The average automobile burns over 12 liters of gasoline in just one hour. Whether you're going to the same office, or just the same neighborhood, carpooling makes a heck of a lot of sense. It's not only easy on the wallet (particularly in light of current insane fuel prices), but will reduce harmful CO2 and fossil fuel emissions. Source : Evan White.

5. Start keeping small plants in your office : Plants have been referred to as "nature's clean air machines".You can pick up a few small plants to keep in your office like the common English Ivy, Heartleafed Philodendron or Green Spider. These three have been named as some of the most efficient air cleaners that prosper indoors with low light and don't require too much water. Few more tips shared by Yusuf Salwati who is an IT Manager are mentioned below that you can use almost immediately at your workplace :

· Reduce the use of paper cups, ask each employee to bring her/his own drinking cup.

· Most new printers come with a tool to help you lower ink consumption, check your printer’s manual.

· If you work in an office with many computer systems, set the power saving mode to 'On' on those computers.

· Wherever applicable, Setup offices where there is enough sun light coming through the windows, so you don’t have to turn on the lights during day time.

· For taking notes, use your computer note pad program instead of paper note pad.

He makes a very important point which states that adapting new ways to keep your work place environment friendly is not only helping all of us save resources, but these ways will also be the skills which would be must for the future managers.
