Technical Writers are also known as technical communicators. The job role demands them to be very communicative, effective at information gathering and managing knowledge effectively. Thoughts, ideas, concepts need to be gathered and has to be transformed into a well acceptable document format that follows all standards, styles, formatting rules, etc.

The role of a technical communicator today is not just limited to write and produce various types of manuals or documentation guides. In a corporate organization, his/her role demands for extra capabilities and initiatives towards knowledge management, effective ways of managing information, networking with groups across sectors and a big role towards looking for transformation of technology trends in the current businesses. Technical Communicators need to be very well ahead of others and have to explore new tools, new technologies and see how industry is moving and what is there for them to achieve. All such contributions today are being made available in corporate organizations by technical communicators through social media applications - internal blogs, internal wiki sites, sharepoint, etc.

Many organizations have started their own social networking platforms in order to improve effective communication among peers, enabling technology discussions and knowledge sharing activities across the organization. Social Media and web 2.0 have changed the ways we communicate. There are plenty of such initiatives that every technical communicator need to be aware of and has to take up such initiatives enabling the organization to be a successful knowledge oriented workplace. This need to happen hand-in-hand along with their regular documentation work. Thereby we can see productive work and contribution towards organization development.
