Getting settled in new organization

Joining new organization and making the first impression right is crucial especially for the person who has just finished collage and joining professional environment. Even if you are experienced and joining any big company first few days are full of excitement and nervousness that can make you a subject of gossiping for old staff. Perception plays important role in any organization.

Here are few tips to make the first impression and getting settled in the new environment with ease and learning and adapting to challenges.

  1. Carefully listen and understand policies told in induction. Induction is very important and if there is no induction happening you need to be proactive and ask about the different procedures of the organization. Ask question and have discussion that will make you understand the reason behind making of the policies.
  2. Always keep photographs of yours with you as it can be asked for some or other purpose.
  3. Understand training plan for coming few days from your seniors and develop your own plan to use your skills in work.
  4. Buddy with some senior in organization who will help you settle down. Most of companies do have Buddy system in place use that smartly.
  5. Know about your growth plan in organization and understand clearly what your KPIs and KRAs. Get clarified this before starting your work.
  6. Understand clearly your responsibilities and ask about the tools and resources you will have to deliver these responsibilities.
  7. Make friends but understand that staff that has spent more time in organization will have some liberty of spending time on breaks which new employee might not be having. As every organization wants new joiners to be productive at earliest, you need to spend more time in learning your work.
  8. Try to built your network which will help you deliver your responsibilities and that will give you edge over other new joiners.
  9. Avoid temptation to teach the methods of doing things which you have learned in your previous experience as it may not be taken positively and your method may not suite in the new organization. You need to suggest innovative solutions but need to be very tactful in putting your ideas as new joiner.
  10. Attend social gatherings like parties, sports events and other functions which will project you as approachable person. Humor plays very important role in settling down in new environment.
  11. Avoid indulging in office politics and do not give your opinions until you properly understand the motive of the person. Avoid gossiping for first few months.
  12. Be careful about the responsibilities given to you by senior staff. Check if this is your role. This can be part of politics where old staff might be looking at you as competitor and may put you in trouble.
  13. Show interest in learning new tasks and ask for more responsibilities once you finish those given to you earlier. Have vocabulary of positive person.
  14. Show flexibility in terms of timings as it helps you learn new work and project you as person who can take pressure.
